How to protect your mental health while working from home

The Coronavirus pandemic has thrown us all into a level of uncertainty that we are not used to. It’s unprecedented times and even though we are all in it together, it has meant that we are experiencing life differently - and one of the biggest changes it that we are all working from home or not working at all. Whilst that can be rewarding on so many different levels, it can also be challenging - especially if you are trying to work and homeschool all at the same time.

So, we’ve pulled together some top tips to make you feel somewhat ‘normal’ during this difficult time…

1.Get up, get dressed!

It is SO easy to fall into a very different routine to the one you are used to. If you’re not going into the office, what’s the point in getting dressed, right? If you don’t have to be anywhere for a certain time, why not just stay in bed all day? No. Getting up and getting dressed will have a massive affect on your mental health and break up the monotony of the every day.

2. Set yourself a schedule

Humans love routine. We love structure. We love predictability. Whether you care to admit it or not, having a stability within the day can be highly beneficial to your mental health - helping to alleviate feelings of stress and anxiety. Create yourself a daily schedule: set a time to get up, have breakfast, do exercise, set your working hours… Trust me, you’ll feel better.

3. Enjoy the outdoors, even if it’s fleeting

If you feel like it’s getting on top of you, take a moment. Take a breath. Step outside. We are all very acquainted with the concept of social distancing, so use that as a positive. Take a moment for yourself. Go for a walk. Go for a run. Maybe even just sit outside. Getting a little fresh air and vitamin D will give you that all important mental boost…

4. Make meal time family time

Schedule a time to sit down with your family at meal times and enjoy their company. With everyone working from home, it’s easy to just pop into the kitchen on a regular basis and snack. Having a structured meal time where everyone comes together is a great opportunity to spend more time with your loved ones and talk!

Looking after your mental health is important, and even more so during such uncertain times. Whilst these are just a few tips to keep you feeling balanced and stress-free, one of our biggest tips is to just take a moment to remember what you enjoy and what makes you happy… and just take a moment every day to do that.
